Subject: What's in a Name?: Sent Date: 11-08-2009 11:58:05 AM From: Shadow the Hedgehog (shadowhedgehogcz) Julian Ivo Robotnik: Julian means 'youth' or 'youthful'. Ivo is 'ovi' spelt backwards; 'ovi' means egg. Robotnik is Czechoslovakian for 'worker'. So Dr. Robotnik's name means 'youthful egg worker'...and we wonder why he became an evil genius. Well, you got close to this one, but not entirely. You see, I am Czech and I can tell you what precisely is this name supposed to mean. "Robota" is originaly Slovakian word for labour, or more precisely "compulsory labour for liegeman". But the word "robot" was first used in the Karel ?apek's drama R. U. R. (Rozum's universal robots) (Rozum is a name, which means reason or intellect). You see, I couldn't help it but since the word "robot" is one of few, maybe the only one our nation gave to whole world, I felt like I have to correct you in this one. The word "robot" comes from our language and it is based on the word work, since robots were originaly created only to work (to labour). So the name Robotnik does not have any other meaning then the one who creates robots :)
