ALL MY HEDGEHOGS?!?! Posted by MaryEchidna on April 05, 2000 Mr. Penders, This might seem like a really dumb thing to ask, but for some reason it's been buging me for a long time (since 1996) and I have to know now! You see, my mom is a HUGE fan of a soap opera called ALL MY CHILDREN, and I was wondering if you were a big time fan of that soap opera too. The reason why I ask this is because in Sonic#38 in a story called "Bedtime Tails" in the first panel of the story you see Sonic watching a show called ALL MY HEDGEHOGS! And thats not the only thing that makes me think that you watch that show. In the old Knuckles solo stories and the mini series, you first showed two of Knuckles ancestors who were brothers, and whose names just happen to be Edmund and Dimitri! And Dimitri just happens to be the evil brother. (In case theres any of you guys who don't have moms or dads who watch this soap, In ALL MY CHILDREN, there are two brothers who used to not get along. During the time the Knuckles solo stories were coming out, the brother who was always doing the wrong things was Dimitri. How do I know this stuff? How can't I know this stuff when my mom loves to talk about her soaps?!) Well anyways, please tell me if I'm right, Mr. Penders. And sorry, for those of you who think this message is so boring (which I know theres a lot of them out there!) Gotta go! It's lunch time for my school! Mary K. --- Inside Scoop Posted by Ken Penders You are indeed correct in spotting the bits of business that were a take-off from All My Children, but I had nothing to do with that. My then partner, Mike Kanterovich, was a HUGE fan of the show, and wanted to do a story that was a homage to the series, but we couldn't quite get it to work without it being too much of an in-joke that most of the readers wouldn't get. Instead, he settled for the small references we were able to work in, including Edmund and Dimitri. I have a couple of these unpublished Sonic stories Mike and I did lying around somewhere, and one of these days, I'll actually post 'em in the Feature Presentation section of this website for all to see. --- More... I'd like to see what Scott Fulop, Paul Castiglia, and Justin Gabrie turned down as well as just the unpublished stuff. Ken, where would the Sonic comic be right now if you were still writing it after #50? As everyone here probably knows already, I'm not happy about how Karl Bollers has been handling it. As for the Pachecamac clan, I think that there were several species of Echidna on the planet at one point(there used to be 5 different species on Earth according to discovered skeletons, now there are two, one with variations depending on what region it lives in) and one(the ones with the best developed hands) continued while the others died out(or were killed off by some...catastrophe). If there was any relation between the two groups(a spike-claw and a dexterious-hand having a kid)the spike claw would be a recessive gene that only shows up every so often or could be induced by exposure to radiation. : The reason why I ask this is because in Sonic#38 in a story called "Bedtime Tails" Who did what on that story? the names are listed, but not to seperate tasks. Did Mike Kanterovitch write and Ken Penders pencil? Did both write it? : In the old Knuckles solo stories and the mini series, you first showed two of Knuckles ancestors who were brothers, and whose names just happen to be Edmund and Dimitri! And Dimitri just happens to be the evil brother. Are other characters in the Knuckles comic named after people(specifically Locke, Hawking, and Remington)? --- I'm a little lost on the species thing... Posted by Catrina A species can be defined as a group of organisms that can produce fertile offspring(my old biology book)This is where I get confused. Not all the things related to this topic match this definition. As for allels and whatever, I guess it's fun to add a little science. Just be careful. Someone once said that it is best not to mess with the natural order of things! Biology ANIMEManiac Maybe the species of these creatures is "Anime"... Hah! --- Hmmm... Someone once said that it is best not to mess with the natural order of things! Basically, recessive hybrids. If spike-clawed echidnas and the dexterious-handed echidnas had kids, while the pure spike claws died out, and the spikes were due to a recessive gene if placed with a dominant Dexterious Handed gene, then the Spike-Claw Echidnas would show up every once in a while, but not often. As for different species of echidnas on Earth, there are two. The Short Beaked Echidna and the Long Beaked Echidna. One of the extinct ones was considerably larger(about 3 feet tall to 5 feet long) than even the long-beaked(the larger of the two remaining) ------ Unseen Sonic Posted by Ken Penders : I'd like to see what Scott Fulop, Paul Castiglia, and Justin Gabrie turned down as well as just the unpublished stuff. Ken, where would the Sonic comic be right now if you were still writing it after #50? It's hard to say at this point where SONIC would have been had I decided to make that my main choice instead of KNUCKLES. For one thing, it wasn't a done deal whether I would have been the ONLY writer on SONIC, whereas I was assured that with KNUCKLES. If I had, I'm not sure how the Princess Sally storyline would have evolved, either, 'cause my original plans were to put Sonic and Tails more front and center, and push back the Freedom Fighters a bit, some stuff which Karl did, though his execution was drastically different from what I would have done. (For instance, Karl played the whole separation scene when Sonic and Tails left Knothole and the Gang in SONIC #57 vastly different from how I would have handled it. Side note: It was my suggestion that resulted in Princess Sally shedding a tear on the cover as Sonic and Tails flew off into the wild blue yonder, whereas the original version depicted her a bit more passive. It's a subtle thing, I know, but I tend to think it's the subtle touches that make all the difference most of the time.) : : The reason why I ask this is because in Sonic#38 in a story called "Bedtime Tails" : Who did what on that story? the names are listed, but not to seperate tasks. Did Mike Kanterovitch write and Ken Penders pencil? Did both write it? Mike and I both wrote it, I pencilled it, and Jon D'Agostino inked it. I think I still have the original art to the complete story, except for the Bat-Sonic and Freedom Fighters cover pin-ups, both of which were sold a long time ago. : : In the old Knuckles solo stories and the mini series, you first showed two of Knuckles ancestors who were brothers, and whose names just happen to be Edmund and Dimitri! And Dimitri just happens to be the evil brother. : Are other characters in the Knuckles comic named after people(specifically Locke, Hawking, and Remington)? Most of the names in Knuckles I've made up, but a few were either inspired by real life people or a direct reference to. Locke's name was a happy accident. I wanted something strong sounding in one syllable and drove myself nuts until I heard someone's name over the radio (I believe it was an author) whose last name was Locke. Once I heard it, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. Lara-Le was spun out of my playing around with various female sounding names. Remington was a reference to my friend's favorite TV detective Remington Steele, which I used as an in-joke. At the time, I just didn't see the character being as prominent as he ended up being, so I thought nothing of it. Hawking was a tribute to Dr. Stephen Hawking. Sabre and several of the Guardians were simply me throwing names to the wall and seeing what I liked, although a couple were derived from literary sources. --- Re: Unseen Sonic Posted by Mack the Weasel I always thought the name Locke had to do with dreadLOCKES. Kinda like the name KNUCKLES. --- I knew it! Posted by Dr. Robotnik : Hawking was a tribute to Dr. Stephen Hawking. I knew it all the time! His interests and the wheelchair were big clues. --- From Sonic to Knuckles, Endgame, and everything in between.. Remember, waaaaaay back when.. You announced your plans for making the Sally we saw at the end of Endgame really turn out to be a doppleganger of sorts. I'm not sure if this has yet been answered or not, but is it possible, had you not been assigned the task of writing Knuckles, that whole arc of the Sally fraud/the real Sally's death could have come to fruition in the Sonic series, or were your plans to drop the Sally-death idea scratched completely way before going Knuckles-solo? I guess an easier way to put it would be this: Was your decision to do Knuckles and only a few backup stories in Sonic one of the larger deciding factors of not following your original concepts of Endgame? Also... How the heck would Doc Quack (assuming he could even do so) explain himself out of that one? Hopefully better than: "Uh..yeah.. she's a fake....So..?" :) : Most of the names in Knuckles I've made up, but a few were either inspired by real life people or a direct reference to. : Locke's name was a happy accident. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Lara also the name of Superman's mommy? :) --- Posted by BobR Not really trying to answer for Ken, but he has said in other venues that the Sally turnaround was at SEGA's request. Apparently marketing had some plans for the young lady, and they didn't want her killed off back then. What those plans were, or if they ever came to pass, is unknown at this time (other than the few Sally items they sold via their Australian website.) : Also... How the heck would Doc Quack (assuming he could even : do so) explain himself out of that one? Hopefully better : than: "Uh..yeah.. she's a fake....So..?" :) Personally, I'd leave the Doc duped like everyone else...he doesn't expect her to recover from her injuries, and the next day she's as fit as can be. To paraphrase the Doc, "I've never seen anything like it!" : Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Lara also the name of : Superman's mommy? :) That's where I thought it might have : co Nope, you're correct. And remember that Superman's father was Jor-El...take the EL, reverse it, and tack it onto Lara's name: Lara-Le. :) Could just be coincidence. :) I remember Arthur Clarke being very non-plussed when it was pointed out to him that HAL (the computer in the story "2001" that he wrote) was only one letter off from IBM. He had not even made that association. --- was it... Posted by Pepper-Jie The author's name...was it John Locke, by any chance? o.o --- That sounds right, I think it is, that's only one I thought of. Sarah-Le --- Remmy..... Posted by Sarah-Le Ok, does Constable Remington have a first name.. or will he forever be known as Remington..... this topic came up a while back with some friends and I and we've been driving each other crazy about it... we even sat down and played a name game...... ((@.x)) Yeah. I know, I like him a little too much... ((o.o;;)) But is it so wrong to find out someone's first name? I think it's very odd to always go by your last name, I should know, in gym back in middle school, we all had our last names on the back of our shirts, and never asked for one another's first name.. heh..... I like the name Dimitri, I have a friend by that name and I always show him pics of Dimitri, say "Look! I drew you again!" He hates it too.. ((o.o)) --- The Return of the NAME GAME!!! Posted by Catrina Some guesses "Spectre" has another spelling: Specter- something like a ghost Tobor- spell it backwards! Sabre- British for Saber I spend too much time in books! Some names are also from Latin, I won't name all of them! Maybe more later. --- Re: The Return of the NAME GAME!!! Posted by BobR : Some guesses : "Spectre" has another spelling: : Specter- something like a ghost Actually, spectre is the English spelling of the Americanized specter. There was a Gene Roddenbery pilot starring Robert Culp and Gig Young called "Spectre" which was basicly set in England. A takeoff on the Sherlock Holmes theme, with Robert Culp playing an international crime investigator specializing in crimes of supernatural origin. Gig Young played his partner/assistant who was also a doctor. : Tobor- spell it backwards! Please don't remind me how many times I've seen that word spelled that way. :) Now if you really wanted an obscure reference, try Rossum or Capek. :) : Sabre- British for Saber Also the name of a very nice private business jet. :) --- A few more and a list in question...
