Sonic#101-I got it and a review! Posted by Alex Tibbetts on September 04, 2001 Sonic The Hedgehog#101 Review Writer:Karl Bollers Penciler:Ron Lim Inker:Pam Eklund and Andrew Pepoy Letterer:Jeff Powell Colorist:Frank Gagliardo Editor/Art Director:J.F. Gabrie This is my first public review,so bear with me. We start outside Robotropolis, where Sonic and co. realize Nate is missing. Sonic goes to save and Sal yells for him to wait, but before he realizes his mistake Sonic runs into the force field. This is where it gets a little confusing. Just as Tails asks if Sonic is all right,Sonic changes back to his original look! This is one of many interesting realities,so listen closely. In this one,Sonic and Tails face a fake Robotnik called Metal Robotnik who's trying to prevent them from reaching the land of the Darkness. Meanwhile,we cut to Robotnik(the real one)who reveals his scheme to marry "Princess Sara".If you've seen Sonic The Hedgehog:The Movie, you know what I mean. This reality is based on it. Anyways,Sonic and Tails battle Metal Robotnik until Kunx shows up(?) and takes out the Metal Robotnik only for Sonic,Tails, and Kunckles to face a whole army of Metal Robotniks! We changes realitys, and this time come to one where the Floating Isle actually allied itself with The Kingdom of Acorn and right now,Sonic watches as the King dubs Kunckles a knight and Kunckles and Sally marry! As the watching An- toine cries over losing his princess,Sonic runs off.Tails calls after Sonic, but his parents unroboticized call him back.Meanwhile,as Sonic runs he thinks about how Kunx and his family brought back Sally's mom and older brother, and how they got close after that.He then arrives at Uncle Chuck's chili dog restaurant where he asks his uncle why he never resumed his position as Royal Inventor, and puts it simply that even though they discovered that Robotnik had sabotaged his roboticizer, his heart was no longer in it. But as they talk Sally suddenly arrives and seems to insure Sonic while they aren't lovers, they can still be best friends. Shifting realities again... We find Sonic and Sally in front of the original Dr.Robotnik who wants his Flora-Terminus file back. But Sonic and Sally decide to jump together than surrender to Robotnik so they jump and are caught in the Freedom Fighter Special, their jet,by the piloting FFs.As Eggbotnik screams revenge,Sally tells Sonic that something isn't right and Sonic agrees. I like this reality because this is Satam, period. Now,a rea- lity that all are probably glad that didn't happen, but is shown to us anyway:what would've happened if Sally had died after all in Endgame. We open in this reality with Sonic shedding a tear on Sal's picture.Sonic's parents come in and tell him it's time,ap- pearantly, for Sally's funeral.Sonic comes to his friends who are all wearing black, let me tell you.As Sonic looks at Sal's grave, his memory suddenly remembers that Robotnik died and Sal was woke up like Snow White. Everything comes back to normal as we're suddenly back out- side Robotropolis with everyone feeling like they've been dreaming for weeks. Sonic and the FFs guess that whoever's behind this,he's gotta be way powerful. But then the scariest thing happens:Uncle Chuck changes to Nate Morgan!AHHH! Um, anyways,he explains that this isn't Robotnik's style and then he changes back.Phew! But then,he changes back and con- tinues he boring exposition but changes right back to Uncle Chuck! Boy,Dan was right, you can't get rid of this guy! Anyways the gang determines whoever did this has stopped for now and they head home. Rating system:I use Sonic HQ's style of rating 1 ring:This sucks! 2 Rings:very bad 3 rings:So-so 4 rings:very good 5 rings:excellent Rating:5 Rings I rated this story 5 rings for the fact that this is the first time I've seen a lot of emotion and that little tink- er on page 11:Sonic cried. It was definitely better than #100 and I hope that all the stories in the future are this good or at least close to this good. Good job,Karl. "Reboot" Writer:Ken Penders Penciler:Dawn Best(debut) Inker:Andrew Pepoy Letterer:Vickie Williams Colorist:Frank Gagliardo Editor:Justin Gabrie We start out this story with Julie-su yelling at Kunckles on how he could join the DL.Kunckles puts it one word-- Tobor. Seems that when Kunx was in his head when he escaped the zone, all he felt was anger.Julie-su asks what that has to do with him,and he tells her that all this time everyone has been fighting to convince either side that they're right, and he makes a point that it's getting them nowhere. He thinks that Dimitri might have some answers to solve that problem. As Dimitri and Lien-da watch them from elsewhere, they wonder what Kunckles has in mind.Dimitri states for Lien-da to keep her mind(and mouth)closed for everyone's benefit.Just then, the couple(Kunckles and Julie-Su) come in and Kunx asks if he there's anything he can do to alter events.Dimitri says he never tried it,but for Kunx to try anyways. He does so and goes back to when Echidnaopolis was in the midst of a giant comet heading for their hometown of Echidnaopolis. Kunckles decides to try and stop the comet and does so only to see that Echidnaopolis is destroyed by an earthquake instead.Kunx arrives back in the ship of Dimitri and tries to determine why Dimitri and everything else is the same as before.Dimitri points out WHY this is why he never tried it,because there are simply too many varibles in affecting a change of history. While Kunx back talks to his uncle saying that he's a coward,Dimitri points out that he knows more physics than he'll ever know and that there's only 3 possible moments in history where he stands the slightest possible chance of accomplishing his task. He met failure at the first one,but Knux must a de- cision:Will he care to make that same mistake or will he listen to Dimitri? Rating:5 rings The story and art were both great, despite being reduced to 6 pages, Kunckles doesn't seem to have become "the Ultimate Villian" just yet,but his changing of reality could mess things up a lot. Other ratings: Cover:Sonic and Robotnik shielding their eyes from Kunx's energy barrage.Very Cool. 5 rings Sega profiles:Sal and the Floating Isle profiles were very well done. It was like reading a history page from a Mobius history book. 5 rings Fan art:I loved all these pictures, esspecially Christine Chong's picture of Sonic snowboarding. Sonic Grams:Proud mention of Dawn Best by Ken Penders. He wants you to send in letters of what you think of her art. Trust me,she's a keeper as far as I'm concerned. Next Issue:Sonic and co. return to Knothole to find a trai- tor in their ranks.Wonder who it is? Story and art by Karl Bollers and Ron Lim.Plus, the current reality-experiment storyline concludes with story and art by Ken Penders and Dawn Best!(I just love this girl's art) Until next review,I remain... Alex Tibbetts a.k.a ShadowHog ------ Good review Posted by Rlan I find it extremely odd though that everyone seems to love the comics (ie; review with good scores) until Dan Drazen makes his review, than they give the down scores. O_o CONSPIRACY! --- I've noticed that too Posted by True Red It's not everyone, but some do. --- Maybe... Posted by Positively_MB Because Dan analyzes every bit of what is presented in the comic. He doesn't simply read it and reviews it. He looks beyond the story, how the characters react to the events, etc, etc --- Re: Maybe... Posted by Bune I have to admit that reading Dan's 100 review changed my view of 100 alot... the SONIC, not the KNUCKLES. They usually do. I don't notice things as much as he does. ~)Bune --- Let Me Say This About That ... Posted by Daniel J. Drazen I really don't go into EVERY BIT of the comic. I've let some grammar flames go unnoticed just because they seemed like small potatoes compared with the more serious problems with a given story: poor continuity, breaks of character, nonsensical plotting, etc. And let's face it: as one of the few Sonic readers who'll be eligible for AARP membership pretty soon, my perspective on the comic is going to be broader than that of many other readers. I started reading it with high expectations about the comic's potential. Those expectations, needless to say, have been destroyed time and again, with the Tails-isn't-Tails plot point in S97 as the point where I gave up on the comic ever amounting to anything more than what it is now. I read the review, and will say no more about the comic until I've had a chance to read it for myself. From the description of the cover story, however, I will say only this: "Hikaske on hukenox am yoque!" --- **whacks Dan with a wet noodle** Posted by WB : "Hikaske on hukenox am yoque!" How many times have I told you to speak the Queens English !!!!! :D ------ Re: Maybe... Posted by Rlan : Because Dan analyzes every bit of what is presented in the comic. He doesn't simply read it and reviews it. He looks beyond the story, how the characters react to the events, etc etc Yeah. But this sorts of does a turn around on that thing Dan mentioned a few reviews ago, about what the age the comic is put against. I think O_o.. (it's 11:53PM where I am -_-;) Anyway, hopefully he'll be happy with the tear that appears. :D --- Posted by Dr. Robotnik He can get everyone to look at the comic again and see things they might have missed before. I don't always agree with him(he tends to like some of James Fry's work, and I don't like any of James Fry's art). As far as story goes, he tends to say what I'm already thinking, but he says it better. --- Posted by Rlan Yeah, alot of the stuff I agree with, some things are a bit too nick-picky-ish, and some stuff I enjoy searching for after reading :) I mean, I enjoy Ron Lims Artwork. I think the problems with his work is more due to the colourists. If we got a few colourists from the Marvel/DC comics, and got that glossy looking paper, THEN we'd be seeing some decent colour! :D Or at least the fellas who do the front cover of the Sonic comic --- Posted by Dr. Robotnik I like Ron's stuff as well, the coloring is a little flat for the penciling style. Better than the coloring for Steven Butler and James Fry's stuff though. --- Posted by Bune They don't use many shades, and it's mostly cel shading. They use the retouch tool, but not making the hair actually have shiny highlights, like some of Bara-chan's art or any other manga-esque coloring. It looks too flat o.o ~)Bune ------ Posted by Vertei Now THIS sounds too confusing for words. That's why I can't understand what's happening >.<... I'll probably have a review out on the board soon... and when my site gets up onto FurNation, I just might bother to put it on there too! BTW, it was a good review... just extrapolate on the plot when you're writing, it help readers ;)
