No, We Didn't Screw Up, and Here's Why Posted by Ken Penders on August 05, 1999 In Reply to: Re: BECAUSE THEY ARE A BUNCH OF MELODRAMATIC ANNOYING JERKS!!!! Trying to cover something up? : : : : WHY DON'T THE PEOPLE AT ARCHIE ADMIT THAT THE SCREWED UP!?!?!?! I had originally planned to have a sequence way back in SONIC #16 explaining how Sally went from her pink color scheme to her now more familiar hues, but it was decided that doing so might be more trouble than it's worth, so the idea was canned at the time. When we decided to reprint the stories we did in SONIC FIRSTS, and later in SONIC SUPER SPECIAL #3, it was decided to place those stories in the same context that today's audience was familiar with. That's why we also relettered "Boomer" to "Rotor". You have to keep in mind we were operating under the premise that a large portion of the current audience wasn't with us in those early days. No matter which way we went, we figured there'd be mail asking to explain either the changes we made or the differences of those early stories from the later stuff, that what ended up in print was the lesser of two evils. As for KNUCKLES #29, while writing the script, when I wrote a reference to Sally having a bad hair day, something clicked and I thought it would be a hoot to finally mention the color difference and explain it away. As much as people get the impression otherwise, there are still a LOT of details we work out along the way. Though we try our best every month to avoid inconsistencies, there are times when things will slip through the cracks. I don't believe this is one of them, but I can certainly understand how it could be perceived that way.
